The Explorer program came to JFK in the early 1980's and has since then, become known throughout the State of New York as one of the most successful posts with high membership, activity, awards, and a large alumni body of men and women who have continued with careers in law enforcement.

What we stand for

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has always taken a strong part in the Law Enforcement explorer program promoting its use at many of our ports of entry. We encourage the youth of America to see what Law Enforcement Exploring is all about and if you feel you have what it takes, we encourage you to apply to become an Explorer at one of our many posts. CBP has a wide array of jobs spanning all levels of Law Enforcement and becoming a CBP explorer would be a great starting point for a career in Law Enforcement.

Training

When accepted into the program, an Explorer will receive extensive training and on the job experience to help prepare them for a career in Law Enforcement. Some of the training activities include:

How the program benefits you and CBP

If accepted into the Explorer Program, you will gain:

  • Exposure to federal law enforcement careers and professionals
  • Exposure to the unique aspects of the CBP law enforcement system
  • Education, training, and a knowledge of career requirements for CBP
  • Opportunities to develop self-confidence and self-discipline
  • Help in establishing and achieving educational and other self-improvement goals
  • Scholarship opportunities from several federal law enforcement agencies

At the same time, if you are accepted into the program, you will be able to share your strengths and experience by:

  • Giving CBP personnel the opportunity to get to know their community's young people by sharing common interest
  • Helping CBP to identify potential law-enforcement career candidates
  • Involving young people in activities that help increase the effectiveness of CBP's own personnel and help accomplish the CBP mission

Requirements for being an Explorer

  • Be between the ages of 14 and 21
  • Be in high school or college
  • Maintain at least a "C" grade average
  • Obtain parent's or guardian's consent
  • Have an interest in law enforcement

Where are our Explorers Now?

Out of the numerous explorers who have been through Post 4701, over 30 have continued into the field of Law Enforcement. Within JFK alone, 3 are now CBP Supervisors, and another 6 are CBP Officers.
